Hello all of you !!! Because of the Rainbow's UK tour this issue of "Over the Rainbow" comes out a bit earlier than usual. In case you're going yourself to England to see the band in action your review will be always more than welcome. We ourselves will go to the concerts in Nottingham (5 Sep), Liverpool (6&7), Stafford (10) and Bristol (11). The November issue will be mainly in the sign of this tour and the new album. The new album is titled: "BENT OUT OF SHAPE" and the release-date for Holland is 19 September! In England the album will be released early september, so it'll be on sale in the importshops before the Dutch release is in the shops. A single is according to Polydor in Hilversum not on the release-list. In England is the in the last fanzine mentioned "Street of dreams" out on both 7 and 12 inch single. Official this happened on 19 augustus, although the record was some days before already in the recordshops. On the back is an instrumental, not called "Doom" but "Anybody there". On the 12 inch there's an extra live-version of Power, recorded in San Antonio, Texas in 1982. KEEP THE RAINBOW ROCKING !!! HOT SHOTS SELF PORTRAIT RITCHIE BLACKMORE HOW ABOUT BLACK MAGIC - Are you interested in vampires? RB: "No, I'm not the Dracula-type. Filmvampires are getting annoying and boring. I'm interested in strange things, especially in ghosts. Alien life though, means nothing for me. I'm also not attracted to the sacrifice of little children or the pulling off of chickenheads, no satanism. I like to hunt ghosts. For my own experience I can tell you they do exist." - Do you like to work in these kind of atmospheres? RB: "Yes, that's why we often rehearse in castles, I don't like the modern environment." - Is there a connection with Deep Purple and your interest for the supernatural? RB: "The first bassplayer of Purple, Nicky Simper, was at that time into seances. I couldn't handle it then, till I understood what was happening. I was attracted pure by my curiosity. I believe more in a religion because I see what happens than in all those diabolic situations." - What are the ideal circumstances to do a seance? RB: "You must not be tired and there must not been any weak personalities present, otherwise you'll get possession. You need strong susceptible persons." - What happens when one person don't believe in it? RB: "A friend of mine didn't believe. He said: "I'm not afraid of your ghosts, I'm strong". The next moment he was thrown from his chair and foam came out of his mouth. He was unconscious. The next day he was taken to a priest and he told he never should do that again and that it was possession. If you don't watch out it'll drive you mad. Too many people try to go to far too soon. Hospitals for mental disturbed people are full of people who are actually possessed by evil ghosts." - Do you see susceptible persons when you're on tour? RB: "In this business I can meet a lot of people who have peculiar experiences. Normally it's a chick in the hotelroom who says: 'What are your peculiar experiences?' I must be meeting about 100 witches each month. The real ones are willing to tell their stories, you can pick them out. They're totally different than the chicks who hang around backstage with their tits protruding and say: 'I'm a witch'."
SONG TEXT
DO YOU CLOSE YOUR EYES |
Myst'ry to me is something I can't see but I see you very well You're slinky, cool and nobody's fool but there's something inside I can tell. I know a poor man, a rich man I know I can talk to a king But nobody here is gonna tell me I can't find out one thing. I see a glow around you Open your arms 'cause I'm walkin' 'till you come straight on through Maybe I'm wrong, no no no It won't take long to see. Do you close your eyes? Do you close your eyes? Do you close your eyes? When you're making love Making sweet love to me. |
The logical trend is that I'll know in the end the things that make you smile So right from the start I'll take the aim at your heart and know that all the while. I know a rich man, a poor man I know I can talk to a king So nobody here is gonna make to believe I can't find out one thing. I see a glow around you Open your arms 'cause I'm comin' Runnin', straight on through I could be wrong but I know it won't take long to see. Do you close your eyes? Do you close your eyes? Do you close your eyes? When you're making love. Do you close your eyes? Do you close your eyes? (I got to know) Do you close your eyes? When you're making love. |
BOOTLEG-CORNER "Catch the Rainbow" This bootleg comes in a cover (which looks like a children's drawing) with a melting rainbow. It was recorded on 27 September 1977 in Oslo, Norway. The songs are: "Kill the king", "Mistreated", "Sixteenth Century greensleeves", "Catch the rainbow", "Long live rock'n'roll", "Man on the silver mountain", "Blues", "Starstruck", "For a dime (some improvisations)", "Still I'm sad", "Beethoven's ninth", "Keyboards solo", "Drums solo/1812th Overture". The sound quality of this double album is fair to good, although sometimes the sound is dull. The concert is good listenable. Ritchie makes especially in the beginning of the concert some mistakes, we can hear some errors in "Mistreated". Ronnie James Dio is in top form, sings fantastic and takes his time to introduce the songs. Bob Daisley, David Stone and Cozy Powell play very well, without having a striking role though. "Catch the Rainbow", "Blues/Starstruck" and "For a dime" (in which the whole band starts spontaneously improvising) are the highlights of this concert. "Stonecold" This is a triple Japanese bootleg, the cover is the same as the "Stonecold" single cover. The next songs are on this record: "Spotlight kid", "Miss mistreated", "I surrender", "Can't happen here", "Tearin' out my heart", "All night long", "Stonecold", "Power", "Blues", "Difficult to cure", Keyboards & Drums solo, "Long live rock'n'roll", "Hey Joe", "Maybe next time" en "Smoke on the water". This record, by the way with a very good sound quality, has a short running time for a triple album, only about 80 minutes. The mentioned place and date of the concert, Madison Square Gardens-New York 19/6/82, are not right. It's, listening to the reactions and sounds from the audience, a concert of the Japanese tour in October 1982. "Live at Budokan" This recently released bootleg has a very good sound quality. This double album comes in a black cover, with a six colours rainbow. On the inside we get a pic with rare effects of Ritchie. Side 1 opens with the intro-tape, followed by a piece of "Over the rainbow". It takes some time before Ritchie start "Spotlight kid", in which we hear him play something else than the usual stuff. Then we get a very good "Miss mistreated" and "I surrender" is the next song. After this track Turner let us hear that he not only know the English, but also a bit of the Japanese language. Then it's time for a speedy "Can't happen here", where it's notable that we don't hear the guitar of Ritchie in the beginning. Side 2 opens with the marvellous "Tearin' out my heart", followed by the "Lazy"-intro and "All night long" in which we hear the Japanese prove they do can sing very well. Then it's Rosenthal who plays "Child in time" that continues with "Stonecold". The Japanese probably sang Ritchie asleep because he starts too late so we get the intro for the song twice. Again the Japanese sing along well in this song. Side 3 begins with "Blues", then a long "Woman from Tokyo" intro and the flashy "Power". It's time for Ritchie's solo with many eastern sounds before we get "Difficult to cure". To end this side we get David's keyboardssolo. Side 4 opens with the last bit of David's solo and the reprise of "Difficult to cure". And now it's time for Bobby to show his skills in his drumsolo. To end we get "Long live rock'n'roll" and that's the end of this excellent bootleg, which was recorded on 21/10/82 in Tokyo. "Rainbow a Paris 1981"
According to the cover it's concerts in Paris (11/6/81) and Lille (12/6/81). But again the Japanese are wrong, in reality it's a concert in Hammersmith Odeon on 26/7/81 (so it's the penultimate gig of the UK tour). While side 6 the encores are of a Japanese concert from 1981. The set in Hammersmith is the same as on the "Can't happen here" bootleg, which was recorded one day after this one; "Spotlight kid", "Love's no friend", "I surrender", "Man on the silver mountain", "Catch the rainbow", "Can't happen here", Keyboards solo, "Lost in Hollywood", "Difficult to cure", Drums solo, "Long live rock'n'roll", "Maybe next time", "All night long", "Rule Britannia", "Since you been gone", "Fire". The last side of this triple album is taken from a concert in August 1981 in Japan, the songs we get are "All night long", "Smoke on the water", "Maybe next time", "Since you been gone" and a Bluesjam. This jam starts with Ritchie, Don and Bobby after which we hear Roger's bass taken the spotlight and a lil' bit later also Joe joins in. It's the highlight of this excellent quality bootleg. The cover is yellow coloured with twice a pressphoto from 1981, one printed in negative form. On the backcover there's a live-photo from the Japanese tourprogram. U.K TOUR DATES 1983 (with reservations) 5/9 NOTTINGHAM ROYAL CENTRE Results of the I N Q U I R Y We will "Over the Rainbow" adjust to the request we got of you after we asked in the last issue to tell us what you wants to see changed. The attention for Gillan and Whitesnake will be minimal from now, 70% of the entries told they even want to read less than now in the fanzine. The attention for ex-Rainbowmembers is more popular, 55% showed serious interest in them. Especially Dio in a bit less extent Powell and Bonnet were mentioned. Record Talk will be from now on (with an eye on the above results) have a maximum length of ½ to 1 page per album, this is the average wish of all the entries. Conclusion: There will be less attention for Gillan (Black Sabbath) and Whitesnake. Probably only mentioned in the short news section "Hot Shots". Ex-Rainbowmembers will get attention when they're in the news. Record Talk will be a little longer and for the rest there will not change a lot. Thanks to everyone who filled out the inquiry. VIDEO This is an addition to the survey in "Over the Rainbow" no 15. SURVEY OF (EX) RAINBOWMEMBERS ON VIDEO There's ofcourse firstly the wellknown cartoon of "Love is all" in which we hear Ronnie James Dio on vocals. There's also an interview Roger did in the show called "Toppop 10 Years Old". This interview was recorded in October 1980 in the Sweet Silence Studio, Copenhagen during the recording of "Difficult to cure". And then there's the official release of "Butterfly Ball". This concert was recorded during the live performance in the Royal Albert Hall on 16 October 1975, later the film footage was mixed in it. We see except for Roger himself also Dee & Lin, Jon Lord, Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale amongst others. - with MSG: "Armed and ready" and "Cry for the nations" (both promos), "Armed and ready" on Pinkpop 1981 and a concert in Hamburg 1981 for Rockpalast, only 45 minutes was aired. - with Whitesnake: "Here I go again" (1 as promo, 2 in Top of the Pops, 3 in Na Sowas), an interview together with David Coverdale in the BBC program The Tube and a full concert on the SWF festival in Ludwigshafen, Germany on 19 March '83. During this concert Cozy did -like he told in an interview that was also aired- for the very last time his famous "633 Squadron/1812th Overture" drumsolo. - with Black Sabbath: Don Kirshners Rock Concert in 1980 ("Heaven and Hell", "Neon knights" and "Die Young"). There are also promos of these last two songs. And about 7 minutes were shown on Canadian TV of a concert in Toronto 1982. - with DIO: promos of "Rainbow in the dark" (recorded in Soho, London) and "Holy Diver" (Ronnie looks like he lives in the Middle Ages). promos of "Night Games" and "That's the way that it is" including amongst others Cozy Powell. Also the first mentioned song in Top of the pops again with Cozy behind the drums. - with Gary Moore: performance in the Old Grey Whistle Test of the track "Back on the streets", with Cozy Powell on drums. The Rockpop concert in Dortmund 1982, only 35 minutes was aired. - with Ozzy Osbourne a full concert on MTV of a concert in California 1982. Don has an inconspicuous role, he's above in a sort of castle dressed as a monk playing his keyboards. - with Uriah Heep promo of "That's the way it is; nothing special. - met Planet P promos of "Static" and "Why me". Finally is COZY POWELL also to be seen in the song that was at that time announced with a lot of fuss in the press "Don't do that" by the Young & Moodyband, where also Lemmy (Motorhead) and the Nolan Sisters were present. HOT SHOTS RAINBOW "STREET OF DREAMS" Just before we were going to get this issue printed we got the 12 inch release of the new Rainbow single. The cover is all about the track "Street of dreams" and shows a sleeping man with a couple of vague figures that are round his bed. On the backcover we see a similar picture but the figures round the bed are not that vague anymore. On the bottom is a little pic of Ritchie dressed as a monk with sandals. The sound of this record is very clean and the whole thing is, like we got used to, by Roger Glover. "Street of dreams", written by Blackmore and Turner, is a commercial Foreigner-like song like "Stonecold". The vocals of Joe is like we got used to on the last album, the solo of Ritchie in the middle is another one from the Blackmore-book, the keyboards are very good without come to the fore and the rhythm section is solid, so good. We assume it's Chuck Burgi who's behind the drumkit despite the fact there's still no official statement about that. On the B-side we get a written by Blackmore track called "Anybody there", an instrumental that we can put in the line of "Weiss heim" and "Vielleicht das nachster Zeit". Or to put it in other words: first-class! The guitar is mixed to the foreground and gets semi-classical accompanied, we hear a church organ and timpani. "Power" is taken from the concert in San Antonio 1982 that was released on video. This live-version is similar to the studio-version. On drums we still hear Bobby Rondinelli, while the backgroundvocals are done by Dee Beale and Lin Robinson. © Rainbow Fanclan 1979-1984
