This is a rough'n'ready translation of the magazine which was original in the Dutch language.
Besides this is only a summary as only the most interesting parts are translated.

From the Headoffice
Hi there Rainbow-lovers !!!

Finally, after months of silence, there quite some news to report from the Rainbow-camp. Joe Lynn Turner told us Bobby Rondinelli is replaced after all and the new man is Chuck Burgi. Although we still don't know if he's definitely the new drummer.

On the Aardschokday (25/6) we bumped into Neil Jeffries of Kerrang. Neil was three weeks ago in the studio with the band and he told us quite some interesting news. According to him they used two drummers on the new album, both were only hired to play in the studio and would not become a new member of the band. So we'll have to wait and see if Chuck Burgi is indeed the new man behind the drumkit. De new single is titled "Street of dreams", on the backside is an instrumental track called "Doom."

On the album will be a song called "Stranded", this song starts with a flute-intro that will be played on keyboards. In Copenhagen Rainbow played soccer against a team of Iron Maiden. Rainbow lost 5-4. In the Rainbow team were among others Ritchie, David Rosenthal, Colin Hart and technician Freddy Hansen. Roger and Joey were saved. In the Maiden-team was Eric 'Under the Rainbow' Thomsen.

Half June, just after the recordings in Copenhagen were finished, Ritchie was present at a concert of The Jackie Lynton Band in the New Golden Lion in Fulham, London. Ritchie got on stage in the encore and played a song with the band.

The new album will be released in August or September. Your reactions on the new Rainbow album are ofcourse very welcome. Early September Rainbow will tour England, we'll visit some of the concerts. We'll also try to talk with the gentlemen. If there are any questions, send them us. If we get the possibility we'll try to get the answers.

KEEP ON FOLLOWING THAT COLORFULL RAINBOW
AS AT THE END THERE'LL BE A POT OF GOLD!

RAINBOW TURNS OUT TO BE IN COPENHAGEN

One week after 'Over the Rainbow' no 17 came out we got the news that Rainbow was in the Sweet Silence Studios since 25 april. And there was the news that Bobby Rondinelli was no longer in the band. Visiting Polydor Holland made us non the wiser, so we decided to look a bit further ourselves. Via a telex of a tourist agency in Copenhagen we finally got the address and phonenumber of the Sweet Silence.

After two tries without any effect we finally spoke on 26 May with Colin Hart. Colin told that Bobby indeed was no longer in the band and that everyone, except for Joe Lynn Turner who was not around at the moment, was busy in the studio. With a 'try it next week again' Colin made us clear that we might have more success.

On 1 June we again got Colin on the phone. On the question of we could speak with Joe he told he wasn't in the studio and was not expected to arrive till 8 o'clock that night. Colin told us Joe was in the hotel, and after we ask if it was alright to phone him there, Colin said that was fine and gave us the phonenumber of the Scandinavia Hotel. We thanked Colin for the cooperation.

Via the telephone operator we were put through to the room of Joe Lynn Turner.

"Yes hello."

Hello, am I speaking with Joe Lynn Turner?

"Yes."

This is René of the Dutch Rainbow Fanclan.

"Hello René."

Maybe you can remember we did an interview with you last year after the concert in Rotterdam in the Hilton hotel.

"Yes, I still remember, how are you?"

Fine, and how are you?

"Also fine, thank you"

I would like to talk you about the new album, is that alright?

"Yeah ofcourse. Well, we're already busy for about six weeks and we have done quite some rock'n'roll songs. A few love songs, some mid-tempo songs and some pop-rock tracks plus quite some hardrock ofcourse. And probably an instrumental song."

What kind of direction will the album be, in comparison with 'Straight between the eyes'?

"It will be in the style of 'SBTE', only better. It's also a bit in the style of 'Difficult to cure'. A bit in between both albums. In fact, there will be everything, an English sound and an American sound, so everyone will be pleased."

Can we expect a song like 'Eyes of fire' on the new album?

"Yes, something like it, but not that long. I have to go tonight at 8 to the studio to change this and that in that particular song. Ritchie is not totally satisfied with that song, but alright to get back to the question, we will keep the style like it was on 'Rising' limited. Don't expect things about ghosts and evil, Ritchie wants to go with the times."

Do you have already a title for the new album?

"We still don't know the title ourselves. there are some ideas, but nothing is final."

Maybe a stupid question, but is Roger producing the album?

"Yes, Roger will be producing it, but it's not a stupid question if you keep in mind there's a lot of work to be done. So he's got a lot of support by me and the others. It's not easy to work with a bunch of lunatics like us (ha ha)."

Why the choice of Sweet Silence?

"Because we couldn't go to Montreal, Asia is recording overthere on the moment. And Ritchie loves the Sweet Silence for his guitarsound.

Will this album mixed digital? If my information is right Sweet Silence has the right gear for that.

"Yes, that's right. We will mix it digital in Canada or America."

When will the album be released?

"If everything goes well late August or early September"

There are strong rumours Bobby is no longer in the band. Is that true?

"Yes, it's true that Bobby is not in the band anymore."

What is the reason or don't you wanna tell?

"0h yeah, I can tell. He left because there were musical differences of opinion. I heard he's now with the Scorpions. By the way we still talk with him and we're still good friends."

I was very surprised to hear he was gone, if I think back to Rotterdam when he was sitting together with Ritchie in the Hilton, they we're talking and it seemed they were good friends..

"Yes, but they still are."

they are?

"Yeah sure, but he wasn't happy with the music. Then Ritchie told him: Alright, let's forget the case. And he left the band."

And who's the new drummer?

"His name is Chuck Burgi and he used to be in Brand-X. He played on the album 'Masques' (1978) and I can tell you he's very good. He's got a heavy sound."

His name means nothing to me.

"Don't mind, I tell you he's very good!"

When will you go on tour again?

"Late August, early September we will tour England."

Did you got the fanzines we send to Sweet Silence?

"Yes, I got them, I'll keep them with the ones I got in Rotterdam, if that's alright?"

Ofcourse that's alright, what's your opinion on the fanzines?

"They look good and well-groomed, I can say we proud of you guys. You do a good job for us."

Thank you Joe, eh... we can be proud of you too! (ha ha). Alright Joe, it was great to have talked with you again.

"That's mutual."

I wish you a lot of success with the new album and hope to see you again in England. Give our best to the other members in the band. Alright?

"Yes, I'll do that. Give my regards to the Dutch fans and I think I can say I speak for the whole band now!"

I will, hey Joe, thanks and see you!!!

BOBBY RONDINELLI is no longer in Rainbow, according to the latest reports he should have played on the new album of the SCORPIONS and is the replacement for Herman Rarebell.

So BOBBY's replacement is CHUCK BURGI. There's not much known of Chuck, only that he played in 1978 on the album "Masques" of the jazz-rock group BRAND-X.

BRAND X   "MASQUES"
(met CHUCK BURGI)

This album, recorded in London May/June 1978, is all instrumental. It's jazz-rock what we get to hear, with the accent on jazz. The only songs which sounds a bit more accessible (so rock) are "The Poke" en "Black Moon." For the rest it's mainly freaky instrumental stuff, except for the drums. So not a striking part for Chuck Burgi. More a dutiful role.

After this album he was no longer part of Brand-X. Heavy rock/metal fans shouldn't buy this album. After listening one time you've heard it all. Only interesting for Rainbow-fans who collect everything of the (ex) Rainbow-members.

HOT SHOTS

  • Besides Bobby Rondinelli also JIMMY BAIN should be appearing on the new Scorpions album. Jimmy though keep a member of Dio.

  • DON AIREY keeps switching between Ozzy Osbourne and Gary Moore. From February till April he toured with Ozzy (so when Vandenberg was the support-act) in the US, in May he played with Gary Moore on several festivals in Europa. In June Don did with Ozzy festivals in the States. Besides there are rumours that he'll replace Jon Lord in Whitesnake.

  • To our colleagues of the Belgian Deep Purple Fanclub DON AIREY answered the question "Why did you left Rainbow?" with: "I had some minor differences with Ritchie, but it was especially Bobby I had problems with. He wasn't ready to play in a major group. He was before drummer in a bar and had no idea of business this size. I couldn't accept him in the band. I certainly not regretting it to have played in Rainbow."

  • BOB DAISLEY plays again with Ozzy Osbourne. He's still on the new Uriah Heep album, titled "Head First." This album is very melodic and sounds a bit like Rainbow.

  • DIO, the group with Ronnie James Dio and Jimmy Bain, will appear on the Donington Festival where Whitesnake is top of the bill. Ronnie is thinking to do some Rainbow songs in his set. He named "Man on the silver mountain", "Starstruck" and maybe also "Stargazer."

    NO EASY WAY

Late last year Ian Gillan did with his band, simply called Gillan, a farewell-tour in England. Ian should have been forced to stop because of voiceproblems, but sooner than expected the ex-Purple singer is back. Very surprisingly he joined Black Sabbath. During his Gillan farewell-tour Ian did an interview with Bobby Liopoulos on 17 October 1982. What Ian told about Deep Purple, Whitesnake and Rainbow you can read here.

    - What do you think of your own band Gillan?

Ian: "I ave a lot of fun with it so I'm happy."

    - What is your favorite Gillan song?

Ian: "That's a very difficult question. I like everything we did. The most enjoyable things were those who were spontaneous. Like "The Maëlstrom" (B-side of the M.A.D. single). It will sound strange, but it was totally spontaneous. We were in a pub, drank a few beers and when we came back in the studio we started to recording. No rehearsals, we didn't had a text or whatever. It went spontaneously, I sang live, and the words of the text and the music just happened when we were recording."

    - What can you tell about Purple?

Ian: "Well, good memories. At least that is what it still mean to me."

    - What were your favorite songs?

Ian: "I think eh.... 'Mary Long' is good, 'Highway star', 'No one came' and 'Fools'. actually most of the stuff we did."

    - What do you think of Mr B and his Rainbow?

    Ian: "Who?"

    - Mr Blackmore and Rainbow.

Ian: Ah Ritchie. Well, Ritchie and I had a few years back a long conversation in a drunk state."

    - Yeah, I heard about that.

Ian: "And I still think he should come back to England. That is to live. Really, because he still don't know where it is all politically about."

    - How about Whitesnake. Are there any friends of you in that band.

Ian: "Oh yeah, Jon (Lord) and little Ian (Paice). I've got a good understanding with them. I can't say that about David Coverdale. I don't like him as a person although he has a good voice."

    - Have you ever heard of Joe Lynn Turner?

Ian: "The singer of Rainbow. Yeah I heard the albums."

    - Do you think he sounds like you when he let us hear his 'screams'?

    Ian: "Is that so?"

    - Yes, sometimes he let hear things that evoke memories to your person.

Ian: "That's a big compliment to me."

    - What is the real story about Deep Purple? In the States the story is still that it was Ritchie who kicked you out of the band.

Ian: "No, that's not true. In September 1972 I wrote the management in London a letter that said I was leaving the group. That was because I think we were on a deadlock. We started to do what people demanded and not what we wanted to do ourselves. They asked me to stay for another nine months because of all the contracts, I agreed but at the end of that period it all got a bit bitter because they knew I was going to leave them."

    - Do you think you will get together again?

    Ian: (No, shaking his head)

    - Also not for reminisce?

Ian: It's not impossible, but there are no plans. If it ever happens it should be completely spontaneous."

    SONG TEXT
    ALL NIGHT LONG

You're walkin' up with your eyes on me
It's lookin' good, but I just don't know
I need a girl who can keep her head
    All night long

You didn't come just to see the show
I guess you know what you want to see
The way you smile lets me know
    I can't go wrong

    Chorus:
I want to touch you, want to feel you
I want to make you mine
I want to love you all night long
I want to be with you all night long
I want to love you all night long
I want to be with you all night long

I saw you standin' down by the stage
Your black stockings and your see-through dress
Your mouth is open, but I don't wanna hear you
    Say goodnight

You're sorta young, but you're over age
I don't care 'cause I like your style
    Don't know about your brain
    But you look all right

    Chorus

Your mind is dirty, but your hands are clean
You're short on class, but your legs are long
You know I can't stand another night
    On my own

Hey, girl, would you like some wine?
What's your name? Are you by yourself?
Are you the one? What's your sign?
    Can I take you home?

    Chorus.

To make this fanzine even more to YOUR requests, we have an inquiry. Send us the answers before 15 August 1983!

    * Should we spend more room for Whitesnake and/or Gillan?
    * Same question for ex-Rainbowmembers?
    * What should be the length of "Record Talk" of albums not directly involved with RAINBOW?
    * Should we have opinions/letters of members in the fanzine?
    * What should we change?
    * What should we NOT change?
    * Any suggestions

    RECORD TALK

    D I O "HOLY DIVER"
    (Mercury 811021-1)

The first "Dio" album took a long time, it initially was planned to come out last February, but it was late May before it was in the shops. The album comes with a bit macaber cover, something you can expect of Ronnie.

The inside cover is nicely and gets back to things Ronnie has been involved with in the past like the Butterfly Ball, Rainbow and Sabbath.

Then the record itself, I have to say I didn't expect something like this. In interviews Ronnie and also Jimmy told they wanted to go back to the "Rainbow Rising" way. But it's more in the Sabbath-style (for about 90%).

Good songs in my opinion are "Stand up and shout", "Holy diver", "Don't talk to strangers", "Rainbow in the dark" and "Shame on the night." The others I think are below Ronnie's level. The keyboards-tones in the track "Rainbow in the dark" are weak, sounds to simple.

But for the rest it's a fine album with good melodic songs. Jimmy and Vinnie we all know by now, they are fine musicians, only I'm not over the moon about guitarist Vivian Campbell, I expected more of him.

About Ronnie we don't have to say much, he sings as fabulous as ever and is for me still one of the best singers on earth. The producing he should left (on this moment at least) to people like Martin Birch or Roger Glover, because he did on that level not more than an average job.

RESPONSE OF OUR MEMBERS ON THIS ALBUM

It looks like Ronnie has put all his energy in this album, I almost never heard him sing as good as on this. Campbell is a good guitarist. Instrumental and vocal this is an absolute must for the hardrockers.

    Fred v.d Oever, Eindhoven.

The album lp is roughly what I expected of it. There is not a song that sticks out, but there are also no real weak songs. Only the production is unfortunately very transparent and just too simply done.

    MISS MISTREATED

    AN INTERVIEW WITH ROGER GLOVER

    - Hello Roger, it's nice to have you here in the studio.

"It's a pleasure for me too."

    - How's the tour going so far?

"Great. We're quite some time on the road."

    - What is it, an European tour or what?

"This is the European tour, but that's part of, what you can call, a worldtour. Not the whole world ofcourse, because there are always places we won't play."

    - Like Northern-Africa?

"For example, I don't think our music will do much overthere."

    - You should try it.

"Maybe yes, we could go there and do a wardance."

    - Did you ever thought about introducing heavy rockmusic in for example Africa?

"Normally we visit countries were our albums sell and where they know us. The point is there are also countries they don't know us. There are a few countries where they know us and we like to play, but can't. They are for example Czechoslovakia, Hungary and Poland. We have many fans overthere."

    - But if you got the opportunity you would do it?

"Yes, I think so. Why not?"

    - Ritchie and you are both British rockmusicians but live in New York. Why did you settled yourselves on the other side of the ocean?

"The band is settled there, the management also is and there is most of the work to be done. In the States the recordmarket is the largest. So it's useful to live overthere. And in the States you don't have to pay as much tax as in the UK."

    - If I talk with you, Roger, you can't get past Deep Purple. If you think about your and Ritchie's musical history, what has been changed in relation to Deep Purple on the field of playing, touring and composing?

"We are both women now. We both got a sex-change. Before we were men, now we're women, put we pretend to be male. That's the biggest change."

    - Still you don't sound like a female-band?

"That's because other groupmembers have to undergo this change."

    - The name of the singer is Turner. So you'll have to let him turn on.

"His name is Turner for a particular reason..... and that's because he turns on all the time."

    - So that's the reason?

    "Absolutely sure!"

    - Roger, you're not only a musician, but also a producer. If you look at the musicscene, specially in the England of today, do you feel at home in it? Look eh .... they tell about Ritchie that he has his own place in the whole rockworld. He does what he wants, he behaves badly, demolish hotelrooms, throws t.v's out of the window and more of that.....

"Oh God, don't they tell that around of him."

    - That's what they tell.

    "I can't believe it."

    - The English musicscene looks like it's controlled now by goodbehaving and well dressed bands like ABC and Haircut 100. How do you feel in this scene?

"I don't think there's changed that much. A lot of people in the musicscene started like this and after they were a few years in the business they changed. I don't care that much about that kinda music, although there is music included that I like to hear, I don't think there's something wrong with new music."

    - What kinda music you listen to in private?

"I listen to many things. I listen to my washingmachine, my typewriter and my dishwasher. My dishwasher plays classical music."

    - Great.

"I like classical music. It's my favorite kind of music."

    - What does your dishwasher plays? Classical or Funk?

    "Beethoven."

    - It should have been an expensive one.

"It definitely was. He's not for sale in America"

    - It's a German, right?

"Yes, I imported it from Germany. The American dishwashers play Grand Funk Railroad."

    - Is it true Ritchie demolish each night a Stratocaster?

    "No, that's not true."

    - Can you try to get us one?

"Well, you know, we never know when it's going to happen. If he smashes one up I can give it a try."

    - Otherwise a non smashed up one, with autograph.

"I don't know where to get a non smashed up one from. He don't give them away."

    - But could you get us one. It don't has to be today (tonight Rainbow plays Stuttgart, Boblingen 24 November 1982), tomorrow is also fine.

    "I'll try."

    - Fine, we like to give it as the prize in a competition?

    "Yes, that's alright."

    - A competition like for example: How many members has the Rainbow family tree? And the winner gets the guitar.

"No, I know a better one. Everyone ofcourse has our latest album "Straight between the eyes." On the backside there are 5 pair of eyes, belonging to the members. The fans should guess which eyes belong to who."

    - That's a good question.

    "It's very difficult."

    - And what does the winner get? A non smashed up Strat?

"Yes maybe, or a smashed up one."

    - Is that sure?

"If Ritchie smash up one, than that one will be yours."

    - Make him smash up one. You already changed your sex, so I think you just can do it. It was nice to have you here, thank you for joining us and have a great concert tonight.

    B O O T L E G - C O R N E R

    "DEEP PURPLE AND SPLIT GROUPS"

    side A
Deep Purple Mk 1 - Hush
Deep Purple Mk 2 - Strange kinda woman
Deep Purple Mk 3 - You fool no one
Ian Gillan - She called me softly

    side B
    Gillan & Ritchie Blackmore - Rock'n'roll medley
    Rainbow - Mistreated
    Whitesnake - Lady Luck
    Rainbow - Captain Cornflakes

"Hush" is taken from an American TV program, it was a performance in a disco in '68. This track was also to be seen in the program "Deep Purple in Rock" that was aired some time ago on the German WDR.

"Strange kinda woman" is a very good and fast live version. At the end of the song we hear Roger and Ritchie with very good bass- and guitarwork after which Ritchie gives us also a great cracking solo from his guitar. Ian Gillan ends the song with some of his famous screams.

"You fool no one" starts with a long improvisation of Jon Lord, after which we get a good version that is like usual very long. After a short guitarintro of Ritchie (including the "Still I'm Sad" theme) there's a blues-jam that is followed by Ritchie with "Blues" like we know it from Rainbow's "On Stage". "You fool no one" gets back one more time as a reprise and when Ritchie finally has finished his solo and Ian Paice is ready to start his drumsolo the track is (luckily) faded away.

"She called me softly"is a nice old rock'n'roll track with Ian Gillan on vocals.

"Rock'n'roll medley" is taken from the performance of Gillan on 10/3 '80 in the London Rainbow Theatre. In the encore Ritchie Blackmore walked on stage and played along with Gillan. We hear the likes of "Lucille", "Bonny Moronie" (after which we get a good guitarduet with Blackmore and Torme), "Sweet Little 16" and "Whole lotta shakin'."

"Mistreated" is from the last US tour with Ronnie James Dio when Rainbow was support-act for REO Speedwagon. The track is taken from a radioshow in Atlanta, Georgia on 24/6 '78. After the superb intro of Ritchie there's a very good version of the old Purple track, in which Ronnie let us hear at the end of the song his excellent vocals.

"Lady Luck" is from the early Whitesnake days, de track is -unlike Purple used to do- pretty stretch out and sounds surprisingly good.

"Captain Cornflakes" is the improvisation in "Man on the silver mountain" with Ronnie Dio as the singer. It's a bit like "Night People." He sings a full (unknown) text in which we hear at the end a few times the words "Captain Cornflakes". After that the song is faded out.

The quality of this bootleg is generally good. On the cover there are 5 colourphotos (Deep Purple Mk 2, Gillan, Whitesnake, Rainbow from 1976 and Ritchie Blackmore from 1980).

On the backside of the cover, which has coloured bars, there are the logos of Deep Purple, Rainbow, Whitesnake and the Ian Gillan Band. At the bottom we read the following text: "Thank you Ritchie, Roger, Ian, David, Jon, Ian for the fuckin' beautiful music. This record was made for the fans."

    FERNANDES
    RITCHIE BLACKMORE STRATOCASTER
    by: Jan Bernards

In our questions-section we always get confronted with requests to tell exactly with what equipment the idol of the person who asks the question gets such a brilliant sound. Some of these persons even go that far that they even want to know what condensers they used for the tone controle on the guitar. We can't leave the possibility to tell these people in Music maker, that it's often not the guitar and amp or the effect pedals (and certainly not the knobs and condensers), that determine the sound. The man behind all the gear, his feeling, his character, they determine the sound for the biggest part.

Still the manufacturer brave play the game in countless (often expensive) attempts, to get the musician people to understand, that guitarist mister famous his own sound has and keeps it that way, because he's loyal to one certain brand. It's striking that Japanese topbrands the last time western topartists commit them to for example name a guitar after an artist.

We have hear a marvellous, brochure with a fifties American colour style look of Fernandes, a pretty new specialist in the field of imitation guitars. They not only make (on the pictures) very nice imitations of all sorts and years Fenders en Gibsons, but they also make them in the finery like some artists they commit to use them. A good example of it is the Ritchie Blackmore Stratocaster.

Mister Blackmore told MM in the past already about how he's customizing his Stratocasters (in his best years always of Fender) so he was totally satisfied with them. Maybe Fernandes has read that article in MM, or they knew to move Ritchie Blackmore to tell them all the details.

This article was taken with permission from "Music Maker" of June 1983, in this magazine there's also a testreview of this guitar.
