And we've got to stick to the law haven't we?" Kerrang! No 14, April 22-May 5 1982 Cozy Powell: The 'Live At The Budokan' album was good At the time I had a bit of food poisoning We had literally just flown to Japan and some of us had eaten some airline food, so half the crew and band were sick I was the one in the band who suffered the worst The venue was 12,500 people, the mobile was there, and the guy was going 'Ladies and Gentleman...' and I'm still throwing up backstage I walked on stage feeling like death, God knows how the album turned out so good How did I do that? Interview by Joe Geesin, 1996 Cozy Powell told Jerry Bloom to ask Ritchie for the story about the radio on the fire This he did, and it turned out to be about the time when they were recording "Long Live Rock 'N' Roll" at the French chateau There was this huge room with a great old fireplace in it and a huge stock of firewood Cozy put all the wood on the fire at the same time and the room was getting extremely hot Colin Hart was fiddling around with this ancient radio, trying to see if he could pick up a station, when the wife of the owner of the chateau walked in. She became all hysterical over Colin touching this radio which, she said, had been in her family for over a hundred years (since before they actually made radios, as Ritchie pointed out!) and would he please leave it alone Then she left and Colin wasn't feeling too well over the incident, but Ritchie and Cozy actually thought that she'd been too rough with him Colin had left the room by now, and Ritchie and Cozy were both eyeing first the radio, then the fire, then each other... As might be guessed they finally picked up the thing, big and old as it was, and threw it on the fire As they ran out of the room laughing Colin returned and seeing their behaviour he knew they'd been up to something, so he started looking around the room to see what they'd done When he finally noticed the radio burning away on the fireplace he ran over and started trying to retrieve it from the flames, and it was at this very moment the woman also entered the room!!! More Black Than Purple No 5, August 1997 Takes us back to something that may haunt you, but you did "Since You Been Gone" with Brian May Cozy Powell: Well, that was my idea funnily enough! Brian wanted to do it Brian said to me: "Would you mind if we did "Since You Been Gone"?" I said: "You'd better ring Ritchie, 'cause he'll never believe it!" So this track that I had refused to play, almost refused to play on, I've now had to play for the last ten years I'll probably have to play it in the next band I join as well, so it's kind of haunted me for that Maybe that's Karma Maybe that's Russ Ballard's way of getting me back No, he loves the song It's a great song, no doubt about it It's just.. you can see why after having done stuff like "Stargazer" and "Gates Of Babylon", suddenly you do "Since You Been Gone", it's like.. are you sure? More Black Than Purple No 5, August 1997 Did you enjoy your time with Whitesnake? Cozy Powell: Yeah, that's why it's quite amusing that "Dolly", as we call him, dear David, and Ritchie of course, don't get on too well I had great delight in winding Ritchie up about that In fact, I've just put a photograph of David Coverdale on his dressing room door, which he'll see when he gets down there! It's all good fun. More Black Than Purple No 5, August 1997 Who were your influences when you started? Cozy Powell: When I started? Buddy Rich, Louis Bellson really more than anybody else because he used to use two bass drums Cozy Cole.. that's where the name came from Then I used to listen to a guy from the Hollies, Bobby Elliot, and Brian Bennett from the Shadows. More Black Than Purple No 5, August 1997 Cozy Powell fights with a car Cozy Powell, drummer of the Michael Schenker Group and owner of a black belt in karate, recently went out of his head Powell was with Schenker in Stoke for a concert when he was waked up at five in the morning by the noise of a car claxon It came from a Ford Capri with a faulty claxon that stood for the hotel where the band stayed Cozy went mad, he went outside and kicked heavily into the Capri. Later it became clear the car was the property of a friend of Schenker's manager, who ofcourse wasn't happy with the treatment his car got Also in the hotel where this took place, the rooms were quite demolished during the visit of the hardrock band.
