Demon's Eye with Doogie White Another Night with Demon's Eye in Bochum Zeche - Bochum, Germany    March 1st, 2013 English version    -    Dutch version After a busy day and a nice prospect we traveled to Bochum for a surprising show of Demon's Eye. Before it already was announced that none other than Axel Rudi Pell would play a song and that was all the more reason to get back and spend more than 250 km on road to go and see this band. But like in previous editions, Demon's Eye is always worthwhile. Once arrived in the Zeche in Bochum we heard that three of the bandmembers were ill. They all had flu symptoms. Moni did not say who otherwise the public would pay too much attention to it. Once in the venue we bumped into Doogie and found out that he had been hit by flu. He gave me a warm welcome and immediately apologized for his voice. After we had a brief conversation, Doogie went backstage to prepare himself for the gig. Later we noticed also Andre and Maik were affected with the flu. After the intro was played the band opened strongly with Kill the King. It was not noticeable that a few band members were ill. In full pace and hard sound the fans started to move. There was immediately a frenzied atmosphere. What got immediately noticed was the sound of Doogie was much too soft so he was barely audible. Despite this, Doogie nevertheless gave it all until the last minute. He is a killer. Does everything for his fans. After this opening Stormbringer and Far over the Rainbow followed. Then the 'funky' Gettin 'Tighter. Andre looked absolutely sick but drummed a very fine show. You need an expert to know that it's not Paice and Cozy sitting behind the drums. It sounds like cliché but this band plays really close to the original. Even real Blackmore freaks say it is incredible what you hear. This was therefore well reflected in Ariel. What a feeling Mark can put in that number. It just will give you goosebumps. Close your eyes and imagine yourself in 1995. Subsequently Sail away, and Burn deployed. Burn remains one of my favorite live songs with great drums. Then came a perfect version of You Fool No One and a great solo by Mark with Blues. This combination ended with Picture Within a tribute to the recently deceased Jon Lord. During Picture Within Doogie was again visible emotionally and I must say this song touches me always. Afterwards Doogie brought the symbolic salute to Jon. The set followed with Child In Time with masterful keyboard work of Florian. You're still recovering from the homage to Jon and Florian take us back away in Jon's work. It is clear that Florian in his daily work at the conservatory and is not an inexperienced musician. Passion and all what Florian felt. And not to mention a Doogie, despite vocal problems, filled the bucket. He gives himself completely. Without you realizing it Demon's Eye plays again a composition in the form of the singalong The Unknown Stranger. Remains a great song. Then came the moment many have been waiting for ...... Mister Axel Rudi Pell, at invitation of Doogie he played along with the masterpiece Mistreated. Mark left temporarily his place to Axel Rudi himself to indulge his home crowd. He lives in Bochum. It goes without saying that he was inspired by Blackmore. He plays Mistreated perfectly and can enthusiastically greet. Nice touch was that Doogie told Axel had bought new shoes for this show. You could sense that the Demon's Eye members gave a great performance tonight. After Mistreated Mark took his role again and Black Night was started and the audience started to sing along. The formal show neared the end with Perfect Strangers and Stargazer. Then followed the first encore Highway Star and a medley of: Long Live Rock 'n Roll / Starstruck / Woman From Tokyo and ..... Smoke On The Water. In the latter Doogie took the Stratocaster of Mark. That was surprising to hear. This shows once again despite vocal problems, he still continues to treat the public in a great performance as well as the whole band. Because honestly, no one really noticed that they wanted to finish their gig soon. Eventually the last encorefollowed anyway and it hit again right in the heart. Mark started with Temple of the King as a Tribute to Ronnie James Dio and Jon Lord. Again with an emotional Doogie White. Tears rolled down his cheeks, and it is certain that he left his feelings free rein. Finally, he thanked all Deep Purple, Rainbow members because they have made it possible for them to be here on this stage. With a thunderous applause the show ended and we spoke only briefly after the show with Mark and Florian who once again were grateful that fans from the Netherlands were present. We belong now also to the Die Hard fans of Demon's Eye. Then we went with a satisfied feeling home. This time without the after party with Doogie but he had to save his voice for the last performance the next day. Vooraf was aangekondigd dat niemand minder dan Axel Rudi Pell een nummer zou meespelen en dat was temeer een reden om weer ruim 250 kilometer on te road te gaan om de band te zien. Maar zoals in voorgaande edities is Demon's Eye altijd de moeite waard. Eenmaal aangekomen in zaal Zeche in Bochum kregen we te horen dat drie van de bandleden ziek waren. Ze hadden alle drie griepverschijnselen. Moni wilde niet zeggen wie anders zou het publiek erop gaan letten. Eenmaal in de zaal kwamen we Doogie tegen en zijn verraadde al dat hij ook getroffen was door griep. Hij gaf me een warm welkom en verontschuldigde zich meteen voor zijn stem. Na een kort gesprek moest Doogie backstage' to prepare himself for the gig'. Achteraf bleek ook André en Maik getroffen. Toen de intro was afgelopen opende de band sterk met Kill the King. Het was niet te merken dat er een paar bandleden ziek waren. In vol tempo en harde sound kwamen de fans in beweging. Er was meteen een uitzinnige sfeer. Wat wel meteen opviel was het geluid van Doogie dat veel te zacht was en dus was ie nauwelijks te horen. Ondanks dit heeft Doogie zich tot de laatste minuut volledig gegeven. Hij blijft een kanjer. Doet alles voor zijn fans. Na deze opening volgde Stormbringer en Far over the Rainbow. Daarna het 'funky' Gettin' Tighter. André oogde absoluut niet ziek en drumde een puike partij. Je moet een kenner zijn om te weten dat niet Paice of Cozy achter de drums zit. Het klinkt cliché achtig maar deze band speelt echt dicht bij het origineel. Ik heb zelfs echte Blackmore freaks zeggen dit is ongelooflijk wat je hoort. Dit kwam dan ook goed tot uiting tijdens Ariel. Wat een gevoel kan die Mark in dat nummer leggen. Alleen maar kippevel wat je krijgt. Sluit je ogen en je waant je in 1995. Vervolgens werden Sail away, en Burn ingezet. Burn blijft een van mijn favoriete live nummers met een geweldige drum. Daarna kwam de perfecte overgang naar You Fool No One en de schitterende solo van Mark met Blues. Deze combi werd afgesloten met Picture Within als hommage aan de onlangs overleden Jon Lord. Tijdens Picture Within werd Doogie weer zichtbaar emotioneel en ik moet zeggen dit nummer raakt mij ook altijd. Na afloop bracht Doogie de symbolische groet aan Jon. De set volgde met Child In Time met meesterlijk keyboard werk van Florian. Je bent nog maar net bekomen van de hommage aan Jon en Florian laat we weer wegdromen in Jon's werk. Het is wel duidelijk dat Florian in het dagelijks werk op het conservatorium geen onervaren muzikant is. Een en al passie wat Florian laat voelen. En niet te vergeten een Doogie, ondanks stemproblemen, vol aan de bak. Hij geeft zich helemaal. Zonder dat je het in de gaten hebt speelt Demon's Eye weer een eigen compositie in the vorm van de meezinger The unknown Stranger. Blijft een geweldige song. Toen kwam het moment waar vele op hebben gewacht……Mister Axel Rudi Pell, op uitnodiging van Doogie speelde mee met het meesterwerk Mistreated. Mark stond tijdelijk even zijn plaats af om Axel Rudi zich te laten uitleven voor zijn thuispubliek. Hij woont immers in Bochum. Het hoeft geen betoog dat ook hij geïnspireerd is door Blackmore. Hij speelt Mistreated perfect en laat zich uitbundig begroeten. Leuk detail was dat hij volgens Doogie speciaal nieuwe schoenen had gekocht voor dit optreden.Je kon merken dat het voor de Demon's Eye leden een geweldig optreden was. Na Mistreated nam Mark zijn rol weer over en werd Black Night ingezet waarop de zaal begon mee te zingen. De formele show naderde het einde met Perfect Strangers en Stargazer. Daarna volgde de eerste toegift Highway Star en een medley van: Long Live Rock 'n Roll/Starstruck/Woman From Tokyo en…..Smoke On The Water. Bij deze laatste nam Doogie de Stratocaster van Mark. Dat was wel verrassend om te horen. Hieruit blijkt maar weer eens ondanks stemproblemen hij toch het publiek blijft trakteren op een geweldige performance zoals ook overigens de gehele band. Want eerlijk gezegd heeft niemand echt gemerkt dat ze hun gig snel wilden afronden. Uiteindelijk volgde dan toch de laatste toegift en die raakte wederom recht in het hart. Mark zette i met Temple of the King als Hommage aan Ronnie James Dio en Jon Lord. Ook nu weer met een emotionele Doogie White. Tranen rollen over zijn wangen en zeker is dat hij zijn gevoel de vrije loop laat. Tenslotte bedankt hij alle Deep Purple, Rainbow leden omdat zij het voor hen mogelijk hebben gemaakt om hier op het podium te kunnen staan. Met een daverend applaus wordt de show beëindigd en spreken slechts kort na de show nog even met Mark en Florian die wederom dankbaar zijn dat er weer fans uit Nederland bij waren. We horen inmiddels ook bij de Die Hard fans van Demon's Eye. Daarna met een voldaan gevoel naar huis. Ditmaal zonder after party met Doogie maar hij moest zich sparen voor het laatste optreden de dag later.
