After a short break Demon's Eye was on tour again and started again in Zeche Carl in Essen. For us another reason to see the band live again and to meet Doogie. Upon arrival the band was busy with the soundcheck and it revealed that we were going to experience a promising evening. The setlist was again significantly different. Before the concert we were warmly welcomed by Florian and Moni. It was appreciated that we had come all the way to Essen.
At half past eight the band came on and opened with Burn. The mood was immediately good. The hall was filled with many old Deep Purple fans. Here and there some older Rainbow fans.
Alternating with their songs of their album 'The Stranger Within' are some old Purple hits over the period Coverdale, who's often neglected. Of course, not the highlights like Ariel, Child in Time and Mistreated. Especially in these songs Mark shines. He plays as a true derivative of Ritchie. His attitude, guitar playing and especially his passion makes us reminiscent of the man in Black. Close your eyes and have difficulty in discovering the differences.
Besides Mark Florian is an accomplished keyboard player who perfectly showed Jon Lord. With impressive intros he lets you into thinking you are listening to Purple. In daily life he's a teacher at the conservatory and you can hear it in his music. What a class that man.
The other members do not fall for each other. During the jam sessions they swept the hall. You just see the joy that comes from these guys. As I said, it was a combination of so well Purple, Rainbow and Demon's Eye songs to climax with a Perfect Stranger.
Followed by two encores that got the audience completely loose. During Smoke on the water there was a lady who climbed on stage and began to rock. Doogie was visibly surprised but let it happen. It indicated that the atmosphere was good.
Eventually the band finished with the Cornerstone hit Singing Alone that went over in Temple of the King. While not as emotional as in Herschbach last year but still very strongly sung.
After the show we shot some photos with Mark and Florian and as expected a little talk with Doogie. He talked about his upcoming tour with Michael Schenker, with whom he spent three days on audition in his hometown of Brighton. He was there with Michael practicing with the lyrics and just the guitar. It was really great for him and look eagerly forward to the tour. And he invited us to come to the gig in Tilburg. Ofcourse we will do that. Then some old stories were picked up and we promised that in November we come and see Demon's Eye again. After that we went with a satisfied feeling home.

As known, Demon's Eye is a perfect Purple / Rainbow cover band. Although a cover band name is not correct. Demon's Eye is more than just a cover band. Demon's Eye shows repeatedly that we are dealing with a band that has a unique sound to perfection that also Deep Purple and Rainbow could show. I can recommend every Deep Purple and Rainbow fan this band to go and see. They deserve more than what they get now. Although this might be the power of Demon's Eye. Doogie also said recently that it is precisely this set up in these circumstances that gives him enormous pleasure. Just only play in big halls is not his thing.

Na een korte onderbreking was Demon's Eye weer on tour en ging weer van start in Zeche Carl in Essen. Voor ons weer een reden om de band weer live te zien en Doogie te ontmoeten. Bij aankomst was de band bezig met de soundcheck en hieruit bleek al dat we een veelbelovende avond zouden gaan beleven. De setlist was weer aanzienlijk aangepast. Voor het concert werden we warm welkom geheten door Florian en Moni. Het werd erg op prijs gesteld dat we helemaal naar Essen waren gekomen.
Om half negen kwam de band op en opende met Burn. De stemming zat er meteen in. De zaal was overigens gevuld met veel oude Deep Purple fans. Hier en daar ook wat oudere Rainbow fans.
Afgewisseld met hun eigen nummers van hun eigen album 'The Stranger Within' komen een aantal oude Purple hits voorbij van de Coverdale periode, die vaak onderbelicht blijft. Natuurlijk ontbreken de highlights als Ariel, Child in Time en Mistreated niet. Vooral in deze nummers blinkt Mark uit. Hij speelt als een ware afgeleide van Ritchie. Zijn houding, gitaarspel en vooral zijn gedrevenheid doet ons sterk denken aan the man in black. Sluit je ogen en hebt moeite met het ontdekken van de verschillen.
Naast Mark is Florian een volleerde keyboardspeler die Jon Lord op perfecte wijze neerzette. Met imponerende intro's laat hij je in de waan dat je naar Purple staat te luisteren. In het dagelijks leven een docent aan het conservatorium en dat is te horen aan zijn muziek. Wat een klasse heeft die man.
De overige leden doen ook niet onder voor elkaar. Tijdens de jam sessies zweepte ze de zaal op. Je ziet gewoon dat het plezier van die gasten afstraalt. Zoals gezegd, werd er dus goed afgewisseld met Purple, Rainbow en Demon's Eye nummers met een climax naar Perfect Stranger.
Opgevolgd door twee toegiften die de zaal helemaal los maakten. Tijdens Smoke on the water was er een dame die op het podium klom en begon te rocken. Doogie was zichtbaar verrast maar liet het gebeuren. Het gaf aan dat de sfeer er goed in zat.
Uiteindelijk sloot de band af met de Cornerstone hit Singing Alone overgaand in Temple of the King. Weliswaar niet zo emotioneel als in Herschbach destijds maar nog altijd erg sterk gezongen.
Na afloop nog wat foto's gemaakt met Mark en Florian en zoals verwacht nog even gesproken met Doogie. Hij had het over zijn komende tournee met Michael Schenker, bij wie hij drie dagen op auditie is geweest in zijn woonplaats Brighton. Hij moest daar met Michael de lyrics oefenen met alleen gitaar. Het was echt super voor hem en ziet dan ook met spanning uit naar de tour. En passant nodigde hij ons uit om naar de gig in Tilburg te komen. Hier zullen we dan ook graag gebruik van maken. Vervolgens nog wat oude verhalen opgehaald en toegezegd dat we ook in November nog een keer naar Demon's Eye komen. Daarna met een tevreden gevoel naar huis.

Zoals bekend is Demon's Eye ook een perfecte Purple/Rainbow cover band. Alhoewel coverband geen juiste benaming is. Demon's Eye is meer dan een gewone cover band. Demon's Eye laat telkens weer zien en horen dat we hier te maken hebben met een band die een eigen geluid heeft máár daarnaast je tot in perfectie Deep Purple en Rainbow kan laten zien en horen. Ik kan dan ook iedere Deep Purple en Rainbow fan aanraden om deze band te gaan zien. Ze verdienen meer dan wat ze krijgen. Alhoewel dit misschien de kracht is van Demon's Eye. Daarnaast zei Doogie onlangs dat juist deze samenstelling in deze omstandigheden hem enorm veel plezier geeft. Alleen maar spelen in grote zalen is niet zijn ding.
