Axel Rudi Pell

The 17th album of our German guitar virtuoso Axel Rudi Pell will be released on March 23, 2018. He has once again delivered a nice piece of work with his band in which Bobbie Rondinelli also plays For the old Rainbow fans. It is still a pleasure to hear him.

Axel Rudi Pell has been a leading musician for years and he always comes back with an awesome album. You can love it or hate it, but to me it is just worth. Every time he knows how to put a lot of long songs that each have something special on an album. With a link to the past and the present of bands such as Rainbow, Deep Purple for the fans to appreciate.

This new album opens with 'Medieval Overture' (1:43), a direct link to his great example. It is immediately followed by a typical ARP rock song 'The Wild And The Young' (4:21). This will also be the opening song of the upcoming setlist I suspect. A nice rock song that comes to ear of which you quickly sing the chorus.

'Wildest Dreams' (5:43) tends to 'Black Night' but once on steam it is again a typical ARP number. 'Long Live Rock' (5:34) Good Rock song that will definitely let the audience sing live. Axel here again shows one of his famous solos which make all his songs just sound different again.

'The Crusaders Of Doom' (8:00) is a long ballad rock song that sounds good. A song written for the voice of singer Johnny Gioeli. 'Truth and Lies' (4:48) is an instrumental song that covers all band members. It could just be that this song is used in the current tour for Bobbie, Volker, and Ferdy their solos.

'Beyond The Light' (7:45) is the only real ballad on this album with a sublime opening by Axel. As usual a tight melody with extremely sensitive vocals by Johnny Gioeli. 'Slaves On The Run' and 'Follow The Sun' (5:12) are solid rock songs of which the latter touches me the most. Especially because I hear Bobbie here as he played with Rainbow in his time.

In my opinion, the almost 10 minutes closing 'Tower of Babylon' (9:50) is the best song of the album. It reminds me of an oriental 'Stargazer' version of Rainbow. Axel Rudi shows here once again that he is inspired by Ritchie. It is a strong song interspersed with tight guitar riffs.

In conclusion, I can say that this is one of his better albums and is nice to listen to. If I had to give a score I would go for 9/10 and am curious how this will sound live. Because for sure there will be several songs from this album. I will be certainly in Weert, The Netherlands on May 4th to see Axel and his boys live at work again.

Axel Rudi Pell

Knights Call

Steamhammer

English version    -    Dutch version

The Wild And The Young’ (4:21).

'The Crusaders Of Doom’(8:00) is een lang ballad rocknummer welke goed klinkt.
